Pollinating Pumpkins

“Pollinating pumpkin flowers by hand so we could carve the pumpkins on Halloween”

This quote was given to me on Facebook, it’s from a much larger story. A boy’s mum planted some pumpkin seeds for him and his brother to look after. Once flowers had sprouted they used paintbrushes to pollinate the two flowers to fertilize them. Pumpkins grew from these two flowers which they took to a competition, they didn’t win, but they got to carve them for Halloween afterwards. The photograph is of plastic pumpkins but I think it illustrates the story well. I like how the real plants have started to grow over the pumpkins as they would if the pumpkins were real. This story shows that there is a lot to be gained from growing plants, nature is more fun when you watch it grow yourself.
